How to Protect your Home While You are Away on Vacation

Posted to Jeremy Page

I ran across an article online that might help you protect your home while you are away. Some of these tips are definitely useful in the Midwest during winter time.

  • Turn down your thermostat to 55 degrees, but don’t turn it off
  • Arrange to have your sidewalk and driveway shoveled
  • Have the Post Office hold your mail and newspapers
  • Leave a key with someone you trust, so they can check in on your home
  • Unplug all electronics that do not need to be plugged in while you are gone
  • Lower the temperature on your water heater
  • Leave a car in the driveway if possible, and use timers on the lights both inside and outside the home
  • Do not advertise being out of town on Facebook, Twitter or other social networks.
  • Place all of your valuables inside a safe
  • If your house is on the market, make sure to let your REALTOR know you will be out of town.

I hope this helps you out and that you enjoy your winter vacation!
