Almost time to head back to school in Lebanon, Indiana

Posted to

None of us like to see the end of summer around the corner, but especially those heading back to school! Next week is registration for the middle and high schools, as well as three of the four elementary schools in Lebanon. I have sent three daughters through the school system in Lebanon and have been very pleased with the education and extra-curricular opportunities provided by this school system (two have gone on to universities and the last is in high school). They attended Harney Elementary, which actually starts next week. Harney was a pilot program in the state experimenting with a "modified" year round schedule. The students start the last week of July, go for nine weeks, are off for two weeks for fall break, then go for nine more and take three weeks at Christmas. After the new year, they go for nine more weeks, off for two at spring break, attend the remaining nine weeks and are off for approximately seven weeks in the summer. This schedule allowed for a "real break" every nine weeks for teachers and students. To enhance the educational support, one of those two weeks students are offered special tutoring time with a teacher and classroom sessions for those students are behind in their studies. Because of this, Harney went from a 3 star to a 4 star school (the highest rating) in 18 months time.

I know it seems summer goes by quickly, but we will all soon need to be watching for those crossing guards and flashing school buses! If you have any questions regarding the schools in Lebanon, please contact me at 765-894-0426.
