The New Indianapolis International Airport Facility
I went to the Community Days public tour of the New Indianapolis International Airport facility to familiarize myself with how to get around the place for when I need to use it (my practical side). Being a life long Indianapolis resident I have frequently used the old airport which is absolutely dwarfed by the new one.
When I was young it was a big event to visit the airport. Back then it was one of the unique experiences Indianapolis had to offer us suburbanites looking for action in big city.
This new facility is on par with San Diego, Denver and most other large cities in the U.S. The architecture is inviting, the floor plan, marked by the “Glory of Sports in Indianapolis” mosaic floor tile, is memorable for keeping your bearings as you hustle across the “Electroland” Pedestrian Bridge toward your gate. The interior décor is accentuated by the mass amounts of natural light from windows, skylights and the glass ceiling/roof over the civic plaza. There is so much to see and do with the extensive shopping and dinning as well as original art pieces commissioned from Hoosier artists.
Even the highway access is much larger and easier to navigate your way into the parking, passenger drop-off and baggage claim areas. The airport is still 30 minutes or less from any side of Indianapolis. This facility is a great step for Indianapolis to fly to new heights and new horizons in air transportation.
